Episode 10: Me and My DJ Phase
April 27, 2008 12:43 PM PDT
Yeah, it's been a while since my last episode, and actually it's been a while since my "DJ phase", in which I listened almost exclusively to the DJ sub-genre of reggae. Nevertheless, I love it more than ever and I so I put this podcast together, containing some of my favorite DJ tracks, including "Barber Saloon" by Mikey Dread (R.I.P.) which could be considered more "rub-a-dub" than DJ. I also put in the 12" Discomix version of Cornell Campbell's "My Hear is Clean", with Dillinger toasting over the riddim. Excellent version. Anyway, here's the tracklisting, and enjoy! 1) Charlie Ace - Creation Version

A tribute podcast to one of my favorite bands. This is pretty much MY "best of" Fishbone, spanning the years 1985-1993. Enjoy! 1) Fishbone (Is Red Hot)

This week we have a special episode, which should've been posted a long time ago. I've put together many of my favorite underground hip hop tunes and finally (thanks to Bob) I have figured out how to make good sized podcasts, so you have 14 songs here, including the 8 and a half minute "Heavyweights Round 4" by Abstract Rude & Tribue Unique! So without further ado, here's yo tracklisting: 1) Jurassic 5 - Lausd
Enjoy! --Walrus January 20, 2008 08:31 AM PST
I was in the mood for a Nyahbinghi podcast, but not one with ten songs at 2 or 3 minutes each. I wanted to have only a few songs, but really long (the exception being the Bob Marley tune) and spiritual. So here is what I have chosen: 1) Bunny Wailer - Old Dragon

This one is for the ladies. That means if I catch any guy listening to this podcast, there's going to be hell to pay. Anyway, here's your "bonus" episode, as promised. While compiling the tracks for this episode I tried not to pick duets that included both male and female vocalists, but rather keep all female. The tunes are in somewhat chronological order, ranging from pre-ska (bluebeat, boogie woogie, whatever you want to call it) to skinhead/early reggae. I did have a roots tune and even a lovers rock tune on there originally but Audacity is a piece of shit and so I had to cut those out. I'll be researching new ways of creating podcasts and hopefully we can have longer podcasts in the future. In the meantime, here's the tracklisting: 1) Hortense Ellis - Hold Me Tenderly
Enjoy ladies! --Walrus January 01, 2008 09:22 PM PST
Woah. I'm sorry. This was supposed to be posted a week ago. But no worries, now you REALLY get a bonus episode for waiting so patiently. Tomorrow a "reggae sisters" podcast will be up! And if it's not up tomorrow, you get a bonus episode next time (see a pattern forming?)! Well anyway, this is jazz part two, and we start things off with "Elijah" by Donald Byrd. A very different song from a very different album. but different is good! "Soul Street" is next by James Carter but it's actually his keyboardist that solos throughout the whole tune. Coleman Hawkins' "Juicy Fruit" is next. Check out the circular breathing of the trumpeter for the first two choruses of his four chorus solo. We slow things down with a Billy Holiday tune called "Speak Low", and then move to Jimmy Rushing taking the helm of the Count Basie Orchestra on "Alright, Okay, You Win" (any reggae fans, tell me if this sounds familiar!). Last but certainly not least is "Russian Lullabye" by John Coltrane. Red Garland starts things off with a piano solo without hinting at the heat that is soon to come (that line sounds like it's from the liner notes...). So anyway, here's the tracklisting: 1) Donald Byrd - Elijah

Wow, it's been almost a month since my last episode. Everything has been pretty hectic over here but since the semester is done and everything, I finally have time to sit down and mess around with some music. So today what I have for you is part one of a two part jazz podcast, featuring some of my favorite jazz tunes (mostly hard bop). I'll mix part two and have it up sometime in the next few days. So, in this episode we start things off with "Mississippi Mud" by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, with the pioneering Bix Beiderbecke on cornet. We've also got Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie on "Salt Peanuts", the amazing Clifford Brown on trumpet with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers on "Mayreh", the great Jim Hall on guitar with Sonny Rollins on "The Bridge" and a Mingus classic "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", among others. Oh and I did not make this picture, but I like it. A lot. 1) Paul Whiteman Orchestra - Mississippi Mud

Hello everyone. For this episode I decided to try something different. I put my ipod on random and wrote down the first 15 reggae tunes that came up. I took out a couple that didn't fit and a couple that I wasn't too fond of, and repeated the process until I got a nice list of songs I was willing to upload. So here it is. We got "Baldheaded Woman", a nice roots tune by Bunny Wailer, starting things off, we got an excellent mid '70s Max Romeo tune called "Revelation Time" with it's dub "Hammer and Sickle", and "Na Na" by The Pioneers which will get your feet moving if they haven't been already. I hope you enjoy this one and maybe I'll put in some real effort next time! 1) Bunny Wailer - Baldheaded Woman

Yeah, it took me a while to start mixing this episode but I've been busy. I know, everyone's busy and that's no excuse. Well fuck you, I take time out of my busy schedule to compile all this music for you and you're the one bitching? Ah alright, It's cool, I'm sorry. So here's what I have for you today. I uploaded some ska/reggae versions of the originals that I posted in the last episode and some of these are pretty damn good if I do say so myself. I sadly had to cut short "Message From a Blackman" because it was the extended version and thus too long to fit the whole thing in the podcast. But that's ok because we've got that obnoxious yelp in "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" right after the first chorus. Check it out, and enjoy the rest of the podcast as well! 1) Toots & the Maytals - Start Me Up

Alright. It's my first episode (finally), and I know I'm doing the cliche covers podcast but this one is two parts. The first part is the originals, and the second part are the covers done in ska and reggae styles. I should point out that "A Night in Tunisia" was originally written and recorded by Dizzy Gillespie, but I like Art Blakey's version better. It's some of the most intense jazz you'll ever hear. Also, I put in live versions of a couple songs. Again, I like them better, so deal with it. My final disclaimer is that I only have one speaker, which means I don't necessarily hear what you hear, so I'm sorry if the mixing isn't very good. Other than that, thanks for listening and check back in a week or two for episode 2! 1) The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up

Podcast SummaryWelcome to my podcast. My name is Andrew. Nobody calls me Walrus, so don't bother. I decided to create a podcast and share my music collection with you lovely people. The music will be pretty mixed up so I'll have something for everyone, or very little for someone, if you want to look at it that way. I don't have a mic and I don't think people want to hear my voice anyway, so I'll let the music speak for itself. Besides, as Art Blakey once said concerning traveling to Europe and speaking a different language, "Who needs words? They'll get the message!" Enjoy! --Andrew About AndrewFans of this Show
